There are many reasons to raise your own rabbits.
Mad Hatter Rabbits & MicroFarm is a backyard rabbitry and microfarm located in Flagstaff, AZ. We grew up raising rabbits for pets and meat and are excited to incorporate this practice into our family life as adults. Over the years we have added goats, chickens, quail, and gardening to our efforts for a more sustainable lifestyle.
We love our animals and treat them as family while they are with us.
Choosing the breeds to raise has been a combination of research and proximity. We wanted animals that would be attractive and enjoyable while breeding and raising them, yet also provide a healthy meat-to-bone ratio to provide food for our family as needed. We have focussed on rare and heritage breeds because these are a unique challenge.
We believe that the closer you can get to your nutritional process, the healthier you are as a human being. We prefer to eat meat that is not treated with antibiotics or subject to abusive practices.
Shortly after beginning our rabbit for meat production venture we discovered rabbit shows. We really enjoy the showing process and have been fortunate enough to have a Best in Show and many Best of Breed and Best Opposite of Breed award winners within our herd!
We are a member of the American Rabbit Breeder’s Association, Inc., the American Dairy Goat Association, and listed in several directories. Our microfarm is a “closed” environment as a biosafety precaution, we do not allow visitors to walk through our property or touch animals. Doing this allows us to ensure you are receiving the healthiest, best quality by-products possible and no sicknesses or diseases are spread.

Hi! I have a question about your closed rabbitry – what do you do with the rabbits that you take to ARBA or 4H fairs (I’ve seen 4H mentioned elsewhere – do your kids participate in 4H?)
Do you keep them quarantined for a certain amount of time before re-introducing them to your rabbitry? How long?

We usually keep a quarantine for 30 days separate from our main herd.

I live in Utah, but I am interested in getting a breeding pair of Cinnamon Rabbits. Do I need to go to Arizona to pick them up or is there another way to transport them?

Hi there! We are unfortunately not raising Cinnamon anymore! There are often transport options – check out Six Guns Transport as they may be closest to you and have done several runs all over the country!
